Most people delay therapy not because they doubt it works, but because they don't know what will happen in the room. The unknown feels heavier than the problem. So here is the honest, unglamorous truth about a first session.

The first ten minutes

Your counsellor will introduce themselves, explain confidentiality in plain words, and ask what brings you here. You can say as much or as little as you want. 'I'm not sure where to start' is a perfectly good place to start.

The middle

Expect gentle questions about your daily life — sleep, work, people around you, what a hard day looks like. This is not an interrogation; it is the counsellor learning the shape of your world so the support actually fits it.

The end

You'll agree on what working together could look like: how often, what you want to feel different, and what pace feels safe. Nothing is locked in. You can change counsellors, change frequency, or stop — kindly and without penalty.

  • You do not need to prepare anything
  • You can cry, or not — both are normal
  • You can ask the counsellor questions too
  • You decide what happens next
The goal of a first session is not a breakthrough. It is the feeling of being safely heard.

If you'd like help finding the right person to have that first conversation with, our intro consultation is a private, unhurried place to start.
