Loving someone through a low phase is its own quiet work. You watch someone you care about dim, and every instinct says fix it — cheer them up, solve the problem, find the right words. Most of those instincts, kindly meant, don't help.
What helps
- Presence over solutions — 'I'm here' beats 'have you tried…'
- Specific offers — 'I'll handle dinner tonight' beats 'tell me if you need anything'
- Patience with repetition — low phases loop; hearing the same worry twice is normal
- Encouraging professional support without ultimatums
What quietly hurts
- Comparing — 'others have it worse'
- Deadlines — 'you should be better by now'
- Taking their withdrawal personally
- Making their recovery your report card
And you
Supporters burn out too. Your rest, your friendships, and sometimes your own counselling session are not selfish — they are what keeps the support sustainable.
